Why Don’t We Offer JK/SK Classes?

As proponents of classical Christian pedagogy, we at NCA believe that in most circumstances, the home is the best learning environment for children of JK/SK age. This is based on our understanding of what a human being is, and what education is for.

Students as Image-bearers:

A Christian education begins with the assumption that our children are formed in the image of God, that they are valuable members of the Christian household, and that they should be raised and trained to think of themselves as members of God’s covenant – our little brothers and sisters in Christ. 

Among other things, classical Christian pedagogy seeks to provide human children with a humane education, understanding their frame (Ps. 103:14), and working with the grain of who they are.

When it comes to the question of kindergarten, not all children are ready to begin academic work at this age. Even for those who are, it is more valuable for them to practice routines and develop virtuous habits such as self-control, obedience, and consistency; children will need these in order to thrive in a school environment, and we believe they are best learned at home, under the guidance and supervision of parents who they love and trust.

With a bit of planning, you can provide your kindergarten-aged child with the foundation they need to get school-ready, in a strong position to benefit from formal classroom instruction. 

What do we Offer Instead?

We’re pleased to offer a kindergarten support and curriculum resource program. This is a set of specially selected materials, detailed instructions, and a series of customized training sessions throughout the year to help you prepare your child for the First Form classroom.

If You are a Parent, You are a Teacher

Our philosophy of teaching can be reduced to the formula: love your students, love your subject, and love your subject in front of your students. When you love something, you want to know it well. As a parent, let’s take it for granted that you love your kids [your students]. Our experienced faculty can help you learn to better love your subjects (reading, spelling, basic math) so you can develop as a teacher.

With some effort, thought, and organization, you can do a great job preparing your child for school.

So What is It?

Vine & Branches is a program of at-home instruction for your JK/SK-aged child. We provide a package of books, worksheets, and other specially curated learning materials for all the subjects that kindergarten students need, including pre-reading, early reading, numbers, Bible, poetry, and stories. 

You also get detailed guides for the best ways to incorporate school time into your day, how to plan and set up your learning environment, teaching techniques, supply lists, work tracker, and more.

We host in-person seminars throughout the year, beginning with how to use these materials and implement this system, and how to troubleshoot, refine, adapt, or expand on the material as you track your child’s progress.

Outside of these seminars, we’re always available by email to field any questions that might arise.

When your child is ready to enter a First Form classroom, you can be confident that your work at home has helped to lay a strong foundation for them to successfully build on.
